A survivor of abuse at Rathgael and Lisnevin Training Schools has launched the initial judicial review challenge against the Ancient Institutional Abuse (HIA) remedy board.
KRW LAW LLP has lodged an application for judicial review with the High Court on behalf of Cyril Glass, a leader of this Survivors Together group.
Mr Glass seeks to have his offer of compensation on appeal quashed and a fresh appeal to be heard. He asserts he should have been permitted an oral hearing and separate witness statements in support of his charm.
Associate solicitor Owen Beattie stated:”That is a significant challenge not only for our client, but may have seismic implications for the thousands of victims and survivors applying to the HIA treatment scheme.
“We accept that the scheme is processing applications and paying compensation to applicants, nevertheless we state that the appeals mechanism and also the way HIA appeals are decided requires urgent court evaluation by way of judicial review.”
