The 2024 ABA Annual Meeting has kicked off in Chicago with a focus on defending democracy and protecting the rule of law. The highlight of the conference is the first-ever Democracy Summit, which will feature discussions led by national leaders on various topics such as assuring trust in elections, promoting civics, and removing contempt from political discourse. ABA President Mary Smith will also present the Unsung Heroes of Democracy Award to 22 individuals and organizations during the summit.

The General Assembly will feature a keynote address by U.S. Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco, who will discuss challenges to the rule of law and concerns facing the nation and the legal profession. Additionally, civil rights advocate Emmet Bondurant will receive the prestigious ABA Medal for his commitment to democratic values and indigent defense.

Apart from these key events, the annual meeting will host a range of programs and panel discussions covering topics related to democracy, the rule of law, and other important issues in the legal profession. Attendees can participate in governance meetings, social gatherings, and various events at the Hyatt Regency Chicago and other downtown locations.

The schedule also includes several award ceremonies, such as the Silver Gavel Awards for Media and the Arts, the Thurgood Marshall Award, and the Margaret Brent Women Lawyers of Achievement Awards. The ABA Pro Bono Luncheon will recognize individuals and entities for their contributions to pro bono and public service.

President Mary Smith will award Presidential Citations to six distinguished members of the legal community, including Bob Clifford, Judge Ann Claire Williams, and John Levi. The recipients will be honored at signature events like the Democracy Summit.

Business matters will be discussed at the ABA Board of Governors meeting, while the House of Delegates will consider proposed resolutions and amendments related to judicial security, flexible working arrangements, and other legal issues. The association’s official policymaking body is expected to address various legal matters during the meetings.

Attendees can also participate in Continuing Legal Education (CLE) programs such as CLE in the City, the CLE Showcase, and ABA Expert Sessions. These sessions cover emerging trends in the legal profession, ethical and professional obligations, and the relationship between outside counsel and in-house counsel.
